Software used without the users consent, to send personal details to a third party.

Spyware usually monitors your activity on the Internet and transmits that information to someone else covertly.

Any software which gains information from your computer. Then using your internet connection, relays that information without your knowledge.

Spyware is capable of the following

  • monitoring keystrokes
  • scanning files on your hard drive
  • reading cookies
  • snooping into other applications eg. email programs, word processors
  • changing your web browsers default home page

This information may be

  • sold to people interested in selling to you
  • used to find and exploit weaknesses in your systems
  • used to transmit viruses
  • used to gain access to your online accounts
