Free Popup BlockersFree popup blockers can make browsing the web so much easier for you. While popups can be very useful to show a small data screen on top of the page, they have been overtaken by the popup abusers to such a degree that they are now often more annoying than useful. The daughter of one of our researchers described popups as "like getting poked in the eye every time you try to smell a flower". Perfectly put! While researching free popup blockers, we came across no less than 23 popup blocking products for sale at up to $79.95. Our advice, don't pay at all. There are plenty of excellent free popup blockers from really reputable sources, so for once we feel it is better not to pay for this service. Top of our list has to be the Free Popup Blockers from 'Alexa'. It is extremely easy to download and use, you can turn it on and off with a single click and you get really helpful data on the page you are viewing. The Alexa-Search-Web function and site information is what makes us think it's the best of all free popup blockers. The Search box is powered by Google and lets you search either the web or the current site you are on. This makes browsing to the exact information you want on a site really easy, letting you accept or reject a site in moments. The site information is web-master quality, particularly useful if you need to know if a site is trustworthy. For example, if a site claims to have a great many customers, or claims to be a really successful web building and hosting company, with an Alexa traffic ranking of 4,329,671 (the top 26% of all active sites) while their competitors site has an Alexa traffic rank of 286 (SBI - this site's host - in the top 0.0017% of all sites) then you can be certain where the truth lies. Follow this link to see if clicking your own site will alter your own web site's Alexa traffic ranking. And talking of trust, Alexa is an 'Amazon' company, so you can be sure that the software will do what they say it will, and nothing else. Next on our list is theFree Popup Blockers from 'Google'. This is very similar to 'Alexa' for blocking pop-ups, but it is not quite as easy to turn the whole toolbar off. If you have a fast enough connection (and especially if you consider yourself a webmaster) we recommend using both popup blockers together. This is because the Alexa toolbar provides excellent data on a websites traffic quantity, and the Google toolbar provides the industry standard Page Rank for every page visited. There are many other free popup blockers available, but we haven't found any that come close to the quality of the two given, so we will leave it there for now.
